It seems I’ve been consumed by major projects lately. The one that has consumed me in the last few weeks (months) has been working with a group to implement EZproxy as Boston University’s new proxy server. The semester starts Tuesday and we are ready. We chose to edit all of the URLs for licensed resources, not a trivial task. We have several database driven pages that have been relatively easy to modify, but we’ve been testing links for weeks. I’ve just finished modifying the URLs in the catalog, 33,000+ records. I’ve been able to make global updates, but it has required about two weeks to accomplish. Teams of librarians have been working on static pages, all with the goal of being ready for the semester to being.
And on the IT side of things, a team has worked to install and configure servers, test, configure, and test again. Not to mention building redundancy into a system that will become a mission critical system. Other’s have created help pages, trained support personnel. It has been a massive effort.
We are up and running. It seems stable. It will be a much easier system to support, and require far less of the end user. It’s been a fun project and a remarkable team. I’m glad I’ve had a chance to be a part of it.
