No Distractions.
David Bowie, 70s pop-star and actor was recently quoted saying, “People are so fucking dumb. Nobody reads anymore, nobody goes out and looks and explores the society and culture that they were brought up in. People have attention spans of 5 seconds and as much depth as a glass of water.” When I read that, I sat back and actually thought about it—because in my book, what Bowie has to say is usually of some importance. And I came to the conclusion that his assertion... Read More
Beauty
Maybe it’s because I’m Latina, maybe it’s because neither my mother nor my mentors are sizes 0, 2 or 4 but I’ve never defined beauty by size. I can’t. Naturally thin, boy-shaped, curvy, flat chested, voluptuous or big-assed women are all realities. At BU it’s easy to forget that. The standard body type here is tall, thin (with moderate curves), and blond—probably because the majority of the population is white. Which is fine, it’s great... Read More
Form Or Content?
It’s happened to us all (or it will, especially if you’re a COM student): a professor will give staunch guidelines but then encourage asserting creative license. I want an A on my assignments but I also want my work to reflect the creative edge I can bring to things. In my experience there is very little chance that you can entirely stick to word-counts and bland,... Read More
Manipulation 101

All day you ask questions: What will make people want this? How are they going to go from the desire to buy to the actual purchase? If you’re selling an idea or image, how do you change perception? For me, it’s perfect. Constant questioning means constant thoughts and constant... Read More
“Girls are so mean to each other.”
That’s what one of my guy friends wrote. Plain and simple. When I read that I wanted to contest it but, instead, I found myself agreeing. What is it that makes girls, young women and full grown women compelled to cut each other to pieces? At BU there is a constant undercurrent of tension between women, why? Fear of differences? Fear of inferiority? Utilization as a defense mechanism? Or maybe it’s just plain spite. All I can say for sure is that it is constant; in... Read More
