By Chris Clemente

I was trapped with my Señora in an elevator. We had to make more small talk than usual.

“Have you seen La Red Social yet?” she asked.

“No, I haven’t, have you?”

“No, no. I said that I’ve seen La Red Social.”

“Si.”

“They say some pretty interesting things about BU…and I was wondering if it’s true.”

“Si.”

“We’ll have to talk about it after you see the film.”

“Bien.”

So began my quest to see The Social Network (La Red Social if you can believe that in Spanish, red means network, and not the color) in Spain.

Seeing movies in Spain is pretty much exactly the same as seeing a movie in the States. It costs about 5-7 Euros ($6.87 – $9.59 according to a Google exchange rate), there are some Spanish commercials and previews (not 15 minutes worth, so you have to be a bit more on time than usual), and they sell palomitas for an exorbitant rate (popcorn doesn’t come with extra butter…I know, it’s loco).

There are also some subtle differences: you get to choose your exact seat—which beats the hell out of finding one in a packed theater, most cinemas don’t have the luxury of stadium seating, and you’re ushered in right before the movie starts and are expected to leave immediately when the movie’s over to accommodate the next showing time that follows (Usually that’s not a problem, but I always follow the advice that a film professor gave me that you should always watch the credits unwind after a film and soak it up).

Anyways, it didn’t take long to get to the BU part of things. It was the first scene. An attractive girl-next-door-type, who happens to attend BU, dumps Mark Zuckerberg (the founder of Facebook), and says she has to leave to study. Zuckerberg snorts that she doesn’t need to study, because she goes to BU.

BAM! IN YOUR FACE, BU! The next sequence also shows a Harvard Finals Club throwing a party, who’s female guest population—that comes on a Party Bus—happens to be quite full of BU girls.

So, I’m supposed to discuss with my Señora whether girls at BU study a lot, or are sluts…Hm.

I don’t really have an answer to this. I know some sluts—okay, what else am I supposed to call a girl I know who strips and has told me numerous times how many guys she’s been with—who studies her ass off (I know it sounds a lot like the stripper-with-a-heart-of-gold stereotype, but stereotypes usually have a bit of truth to them, otherwise they wouldn’t be stereotypes!).

I also know some people who have been in relationships for long periods of time, and simply do not study. The truth is it’s impossible to polarize girls at BU, or girls really at any college or university.

BU has sluts, studiers, slackers, and everything in between, and most of the people I’ve come to know during my time here have mostly been conscientious about studying.

After all, people have been posting this link all over Facebook:

Take that Mark Zuckerberg, I don’t see Harvard on that list.
