iPodding

So after two weeks, I finally got a job! I’m working at a clothing store in Brooklyn called Peachfrog. I worked there last summer, doing promotional work at Union Square. This year I’ll be doing the same thing but all around Brooklyn. My official title, “iPodder” means I get to give out iPod cases which bring inside discount cards for the store. My job is to tell these people how awesome the store is and convince them to check it out.

Interacting with the public, especially somewhere like Union Square leads to some really interesting encounters. My friend/coworker and I never had a dull moment. There were the free huggers who tried to recruit us (in a mildly cult-like way), the daily religious fanatics and the angry people with strong political views who were always there to entertain. One day, a man who appeared to be homeless stopped at our table and asked us about our promotion. He was eager to learn all about it and said we had a great marketing idea. He took some iPod cases and we expected to never see him again. Only a few minutes later, he came back with a handful of people interested in the store. Pretty soon he was venturing into the crowds of people with fistfuls of iPod cases and shouting about free stuff. It was quite remarkable. By the end of the day, I’m pretty sure he attracted more potential customers than either of us did!

This summer, we’re concentrating our efforts in and around Williamsburg, Brooklyn. That’s where the store is and where we’re most likely to get customers. My friend aptly described Williamsburg as a great mix of hipsters, gay men, and mothers with tattoos. I’m not sure what exactly to expect, but I know it’s going to be an interesting summer.
